Stash Report - 21 October 2012

Finally, some more stash used.  I had a week of vacation this week, and got some quilting time in on Thursday.  I had a piece of blue with yellow rubber ducks that was a perfect size for the smaller blue and yellow tumbler top I made this summer.  Had to clean up the sewing room to load something on the longarm.

That quilt still needs trimming and binding.

I've also been cutting scraps into chisel shapes with my new GO die.  I'm making a Friendship Braid quilt with anything-goes fabrics.  Just arranging one side dark and the other light for the braid.  So far, I have 2 1/2 braids made.  I haven't counted any of the fabric for this quilt in the stash report.

Stash Report - 12 August 2012

It's been quite a while since I posted a stash report - or anything else, for that matter.
I have been sewing, though.  I finished the top for the 30's plaid Going My Way quilt I was working on in my last post.  I haven't found anything in the stash yet to make a backing out of, so that got folded and put in the flimsies drawer.

At my last trip to Cottonwood, I bought a pattern by Miss Rosie's Quilt Company - Double Duty.  It's a combination of log cabins and flying geese, all 6" blocks.  I pulled tans/beiges for the lights and blue/green/red for the darks - all from stash.  This morning, I finished piecing the blocks and cut setting triangles.  I need a chance to set up the design wall to lay these out - or it might fit on my bed.  So that accounts for the use since last report.

Still no fabric purchased this year.

On to the numbers:

Stash Report - 17 June 2012

It's been a good week for sewing.  Last Sunday, I made a trip to Charlottesville to Cottonwood Quilt Shop to get some dies for my GO.  I had picked out a pattern I wanted to make, and I knew the right dies were available to cut it.  Between Cottonwood, and JoAnn's, I was able to get all the dies I needed.   I even lucked into a sale at JoAnn's, where the dies were 25% off - I bought all the geometric ones they had, plus one for applique flowers.
Between the two places, I bought 10 dies, I think.

The quilt I'm making is Going My Way from the book "It's a Dog's Life" by Miss Rosie's Quilt Company.

I came home and started cutting my collection of 30's color plaids and some Kona white from my stash.  I got the quilt all cut and started piecing flying geese.   I worked on piecing a little bit a couple of mornings before work.  And I took Thursday afternoon as vacation time.  While I was putting blocks together, I was trying to just pick up random colors of geese.  Then as I put together the columns of geese and their setting triangles, I also just picked up random pieces.  As I created each column, I sewed it to the previous sets, so I created the whole top as I went - I don't usually do that.  Ordinarily, I would make all the columns and lay them out, then put all the columns together.  I liked how quickly everything seemed to get done by sewing the columns as I went.  The top is all together now.  It just needs borders.  That may be this evening's project, depending on what we do for Father's Day.

Stash Report - 3 June 2012

It's been more than a month since I last posted a stash report.  Life continues to be hectic!
I have done a little bit of sewing since my last report.  I've been playing with my GO and have put together 2 small quilts with my tumbler die, using up three pieces of yardage from the stash.  And have used a little bit for a few background squares for 6" applique hearts, which is an ongoing take-with project.  I use up nickle squares for the heart.  And that's about it as far as sewing goes since the end of April.    I did knit a shawlette using fingering weight yarn.  It's finished, but still needs to be blocked - I need to find someplace I can pin it out and leave it.

The numbers:

In this week:                    0 yds
In YTD:                           0 yds

Out this week:            0.19 yds

Stash report - week 16, 15 April 2012

It's been a while since I posted a stash report.  Still no movement of the numbers since my last post.  However, I have done some sewing in the last couple of weeks.  I finished making the blocks today for my scrap stars quilt.  I even laid them out on the bed to decide placement, and they are now carefully stacked on my ironing board until my next chance to sew.

My other quilting activity has been to buy an Accuquilt GO cutter - it arrived 2 weeks ago; I've been working on cutting up the scrap bin.  So far, I have three dies - the one that comes with the GO (a 2 1/2" square, a pair of 2" finished triangles, and a 4 1/2" square), a 2 1/2" strip die, and a large (6") tumbler.  I've mostly been pulling the trimmings from quilt backs and cutting 2 1/2" strips.  I know I'll use those.  I'd like to make more quilts out of the Scrap Basket Surprises & Scrap Basket Sensations books (Kim Brackett).  They all use 2 1/2" strips.

The numbers:
In this week. 0 yds
Out this week. 0 yds
In YTD. 0 yds

Stash report week 13 -24 March 2012

Another week of nothing in, nothing out. It was a busy week both at work and at home, so not much time for quilting. I did get a chance go do some of the piecing on my scrap stars quilt yesterday. I got that all cut and counted last week.

Stash report - week 12 - 18 March 2012

This report covers the last two weeks, since I didn't do a report last week.  I've actually used something each of the last 2 weeks.  First making binding, and yesterday, cutting out a new quilt.  I pulled dark blue and tan strips and FQs for the star quilt in Kim Brackett's Scrap Basket Surprises book.  The pieces are now all stacked in a box ready for sewing.

Still no fabric purchases.  I avoided temptation by skipping the annual auction at yesterday's guild meeting.  I did go by Patchwork Plus and get a new cutting mat for my new cutting table.  I like my new table - a kitchen island unit.  I have rulers hanging from the "pot hooks" on the sides.  And the drawer is great for being able to keep the scissors and rotary cutters out of the way.  I spent time yesterday putting away some of the "stuff" that had been under my old cutting table so that I could clear off the ironing board.  I still need a couple of baskets or something for the shelves to hold embroidery stabilizers.

Numbers for the last two weeks:

Used last 2 weeks:            4.11 yds
Added last 2 weeks:         0      yds
Used YTD:                     14.73 yds

Stash report - week 10 - 4 March 2012

I have done some quilting, but nothing new for the stash report.  I'll have some more used next week, since I made some binding this morning.

Yesterday, I finished quilting my #1 UFO, Sunbonnet Sue (supposed to be the February UFO, but you know how that goes).  I finished my #8 UFO (the UFO of the month for March) in January, so I'm using this month to catch up with February.

Sunbonnet Sue still needs to be trimmed and have the binding put on (that was the binding made this morning).  I also made and put on the binding for my moth wallhanging, so it's now ready for stitching down on the back.

I'm not using much stash so far this year, since I count my usage as I cut, and so far, I've been focusing on UFOs that were close to being done.  Once I'm out of tops ready to quilt, I'll have to start working with blocks again.

My unchanged numbers:

In this week:          0       yds
In YTD:                 0       yds

Out this week:       0        yds
Out YTD:              10.62 yds

Stash report - week 9 - 26 February 2012

Another week with no fabric purchased.  It's been a quilty end of the week.  I took Thursday and Friday as vacation days to go to the Mid Atlantic Quilt Festival.  Thursday didn't work out because of things at work, but I did drive down on Friday.  Lots of gorgeous quilts.  I mostly took close-up pictures of quilting.  They always have lots of good vendors, but the only thing I bought was a set of prewound bobbins for the longarm.

Thursday, I did find something in the stash for backing my Sunbonnet Sue - the fabric used is for making the backing.  I got the quilt loaded on Thursday, then started quilting yesterday.  I got all the stitch-in-the-ditch done, and got the background fill done for one of the six applique squares.  I don't know if I'll get a chance to do any more quilting today, but will finish this one within the next week or so.  This is my #1 on my UFO list, so is the one for the February challenge at Judy's blog.

Numbers for this week:

In this week:                0      yds

Stash report - week 8 - 19 Feb 2012

Not much used this week.  Last Sunday I cut the binding for my moth wallhanging before we left for Richmond.  I still haven't made the binding yet; maybe today.

I did get about half the binding stitched down on the QOV last Sunday - and haven't done anything else with it yet.

Yesterday was a grocery shopping day - Costco and Food Lion - getting not only the weekly groceries, but things for a freezer cooking session to make taco meat, meatballs and chicken nuggets.  Yikes!  groceries keep getting more expensive.

Today's plan is to do the cooking and some laundry while that is going, then to go up and get the binding on the moth wallhanging, then figure out what to use for backing for my Sunbonnet Sue quilt.  That is this month's UFO, so I need to get going on it.  I want to start the quilting when I'm on vacation at the end of the week.

The numbers for this week:
Used this week:                     0.25 yds

UFO Challenge for February

I did finish my January UFO - early in the month.  For February, Judy has picked UFO #1.  For me, that is Sunbonnet Sue.  The top is completed, need to make a backing and get it quilted.  That won't happen for a little while, since I have my moth wallhanging (to be called Night Flyers) loaded.  I'm still having trouble with backlash in the bobbin, so need to either change the bobbin thread or get some bobbin washers, or something.  That will have to wait for an opportunity to go to the quilt shop.  Maybe Saturday afternoon, depending on how long the USADance board meeting goes.

Stash report - week 5, 29 January 2012

A little more fabric out this week, and still nothing added.  I made binding for the QOV mystery on Friday, and got that stitched to the front of the quilt, ready for hand stitching down on the back.  Yesterday I prepared the backing for my moth wallhanging.  That's now loaded on the longarm.  I tried to start quilting, but was having problems with the bobbin thread breaking.  I need to investigate that some more.  I'm using machine embroidery thread for quilting;  I've done that before without problems, so need to check to see if I've developed a rough spot on the bobbin case, or if I have a warped bobbin.  Will need to spend some time troubleshooting today.

Stash numbers for the year:

Added this week:            0      yds

Stash report - week 4, 22 January 2012

I did some quilting this week.  My "used" was for borders and backing for the QOV mystery on my UFO list.  I plan to spend some time in the studio this afternoon putting borders on another UFO, so will have net use again next week!

Stash report - week 3, 15 January 2012

Nothing in, nothing out this week, but I did have a finish.  I count my fabric out of the stash as it is cut and incorporated into a project.
This week, I finished sewing down the binding on a UFO mystery quilt, so that is my second UFO finish for the year.

Stash report:

Another UFO finish

Watching the Saints/49ers football game, I've finished stitching down the binding on my NYE 2008 (I think?) mystery - the dinosaur themed toddler quilt.  This one is ca. 60 x 60, so a nice size for a lap quilt or toddler bed.  I'm pleased with how this turned out - it's going to make some child happy.  This one was #8 on my UFO list for the year.

This one started the year with the binding on, ready to stitch down, so didn't require a lot of work to finish.  Now I need to get something else to that point to have a good project for handwork while watching football on TV.

stash report - week 2, 8 January 2012

I actually have a little bit of fabric out for finishing my Planet Patchwork mystery tablerunner.  I made a trip to the LQS yesterday, but didn't buy a thing, just browsing.  I did spend time cleaning off my cutting table yesterday, so I may get some sewing in today.

2012 UFO Challenge

Well, I need to post my official list on the link-up with Judy at Patchwork Times.  I've numbered the top 12 things on my UFO list so I can keep track of them, but here's the list:
1  Sunbonnet Sue  - top finished, needs quilting
2  Jelly Roll 1600 - top finished, needs quilting
3  QOV mystery - needs borders
4  SITP - have the blocks pieced; deciding if I want to make it larger
5  Planet Patchwork mystery tablerunner - blocks at start of the day
6  Summer 2008 mystery - top finished, needs quilting
7  President's memory quilt - needs corners on the top
8  NYE 2008 mystery - binding in progress
9  Christmas stars swap blocks - blocks
10 Fractured mini - top finished, needs quilting
11 Colorwash wallhanging - top finished - needs quilting (may add applique first)
12 Moth wallhanging - needs borders

So for January, Judy picked #5 - and I've already gone up and put the blocks together and finished it!

UFO Challenge for January

Well, this is starting well.  Judy has picked #5 for the UFO Challenge for January.  I have the Planet Patchwork mystery tablerunner as my #5 for 2012.  That one should be pretty quick to finish up - I need to sash between the three blocks, then layer, quilt and bind.  I'll probably go up an work on that some in a few minutes.  I like easy starts for the year!

3:45 PM - no time like the present - I found an orange, sashed the three blocks, found a scrap of batting that was the perfect size, used the same orange for the back, and did a simple stitch-in-the-ditch quilting on the DSM.  I even folded the backing around to the front for a binding and machine stitched it down.  So I have my first finish of 2012!

Stash report - week 1, 1 January 2012

Well, it's a new year, and a new start to the stash report.  I didn't actually buy or use anything last week, so all  my numbers will start at 0 for the year.

I'm hoping to use more this year - I'd be delighted to use more than I buy, but mostly, using more means that I've been sewing, LOL.

In this week:       0 yds
Used this week:  0 yds
In YTD:              0 yds
Out YTD:           0 yds
Net for 2012:      0 yds

I did check my year-end 2011 numbers against the 2010 year-end numbers.
I used more and bought less in 2011:

2010 Year end : added 102.38, used 50.77, for  a net addition of 51.62 yds
2011 Year end:  added 96.72, used 64.98, for a net addition of 31.74 yds
